Archaeological sites near Cusco

Monday, 16th October 2023

Tony stood in the ruins of Tambomachay fortress, an Inca archaeological site near Cusco. In the background are terraces ascending up a slope. The terraces are supported by distinctive Inca stone walls: the stones used to build the walls are often irregularly shaped but have been cut to fit very tightly with the adjoining stones without mortar. To the left, water can be seen flowing down these terraces through small stone-cut channels.

This particular plane was captured by the Germans in October 1918 after being forced down during a bombing raid over Germany. It then ended up in a museum in Germany, before being captured by Soviet forces during World War Two. In the 1960s it turned up at an air museum in Krakow, Poland. The RAF Museum was then able to get it back by exchanging it for a Spitfire. An interesting journey!
