Sierra Leone and Liberia, November-December 2024

Tony has just arrived in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone, West Africa. He’s riding in the back of a Keke (Tuk-Tuk local taxi-like vehicle. It is early-mid morning on Thursday, 21st November. Tony’s leaving Kissai Port and being driven through lively Freetown to the neighbourhood of Aberdeen in the west part of the city. As you can see and heare, the ride is bumpy, colourful Kekes and motorbike taxis are honking their horns non-stop and many drivers and padestrians are talking and shoutting constantly in the local Crio language, spoken throughout Sierra Leone. It’s a lively, energetic experience with lots of smells, food to pee, exhaust fuims to petrol and more. The sun is beating down and it’s very humid, even at 10 in the morning. A fantastic introduction to Sierra Leone and Freetown life and culture!
Tony is enjoying an early morning guided forest walk on Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the Moa River in Southeast Sierra Leone. Tiwai means Big Island. Tony’s local guide has just spotted some monkeys in the trees. Their strange calls can clearly be heard. An amazing sound. Don’t know if the monkeys can be seen on camera, but they can definitely be heard!
Tony on Robertsport Beach, Liberia. Views and sounds of the crashing Atlantic waves hitting the long sandy surf beach of Robertsport, a small town in Western Liberia, near to the border with Sierra Leone. Tony relaxed here for 3 days, staying at Philip’s Guesthouse, on the beach. Robertsport, primarily a fishing village, is named after Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the first president of Liberia. The town lies on Cape Mount peninsula, a spit of land separating the brackish lagoon Lake Piso from the Atlantic Ocean, 50 miles (80 km) north-west of Monrovia, Liberia’s busy and noisy capital. Enjoy the wonderful sight and sound. The crashing waves are magnificent.
